Having been a successful County icon for 114 years, The Black River Cheese Company has a lot to be thankful about when it comes to the support of local residents and its wonderful following of cheese lovers, both at home and abroad. Through both the good times and the tough times, The County’s residents have been the foundation of support for the company.
“Without our community, we wouldn’t have weathered the economic storms that have buffeted our company over the past century,” states Doug Peters, General Manager and Master Cheese Maker. "As a result, it is in the best interest of our community that we, in turn, give back to those whose life storms have made it tough to get nutritious food they deserve to sustain their families.”
As part of the company’s dedication to give back to the community, this past week, the company presented the Picton United Church County Food Bank Volunteer, Ellen Brownbill with a cheque for $1500.00, the company's third donation this year.
"With children back in school and Thanksgiving just around the corner, we hope our donation will help out those struggling to ensure that their families have nutritious food,” Peters adds.
According to Peters, part of the credit goes to their ongoing in-store program that they implemented in 2013 which kindly asks visitors who are enjoying their cheese samples to make a donation of any kind to their Food Bank Jar. Every few months, the company tallies up their patrons' donations, matches whatever is donated dollar for dollar, and then issues a cheque to the Food Bank.
At last week's cheque presentation, Ms. Brownbill stated, "Black River Cheese has become one of the Food Bank's top eight contributors over the past two years and we are sincerely appreciate all that they have done to help us help others."
With more than $8,000 in donations to the Food Bank, Peters says, "It is with our heartfelt thanks from the Board, our Shareholders, the management and staff that we make these donation. We look forward to continuing our program of “Giving Back” in the years ahead again thanks to our regular patrons and visitors.”
